Message from the Principal
Dear Prairie Sky School Families,
Thank you to all of our students for their participation in today's Terry Fox Run. Students learned about Terry Fox's inspiring legacy before coming together outside as a school community for the run. We are grateful to our PEW Team, Ms. Kennedy, and her leadership students for organizing such a meaningful event.
It is wonderful to see our school settling into its routines and finding its groove. Classrooms are busy with learning, friendships are growing, and students are becoming increasingly engaged in school life.
As always, student safety remains a priority. Please help us reinforce safe travel to and from school by using designated crosswalks and ensuring students wear proper safety equipment, including helmets, when riding bikes and scooters.
Looking ahead, our Kindergarten students will continue celebrating Colours Week, and Prairie Sky athletics will be ramping up as teams begin practices and competitions.

CBE Offerings
This fall, the CBE has hired hundreds of teachers, education assistants and other school staff to support student learning. These positions have been funded by the Government of Alberta with the intention of addressing classroom complexity and class sizes.
We are pleased to welcome additional new staff to our school for the 2026-27 school year:
- Gagan Sran – CCT Teacher Grade 3/4
- Nicole Cornforth – CCT EA Grade 3
- Smita Shah – CCT EA Grade 4
We are very pleased to welcome these new staff members to our school community! This additional staff will help ensure students benefit from:
- Increased teacher attention
- Improved classroom learning environments
- Greater support for diverse learning needs

Auditions at Prairie Sky
This week on Wednesday, September 23rd, during lunch students in grades 7 through grade 9 will have the opportunity to audition for the Youth Theatre Canada. They are making a casting call for The Lost World. If this is something you would like your child to do, please use this linked letter to register them.
Walking Field Trips
The CBE values the educational benefits of field trips. Field trips close to our school can complement classroom learning by giving students opportunities to explore the community around their school.
Please use this letter to learn about the spaces in Skyview we may access or spots in neighbouring communities.
Safety
The recent door change switch for Kindergarten and Grade 3 has made a significant difference in foot traffic at our back doors. We want to thank parents for making the quick change for student safety.
Please be aware the the parking lot is closed for drop off and pick up to all students and families. For safety reasons we ask that you do not drive or walk through the parking lot.
Book Study: The Anxious Generation
Chapter 4 Summary: “Puberty and the Blocked Transition to Adulthood”
In Chapter 4, Haidt focuses on puberty and the important role it plays in a young person's development. He explains that during adolescence, the brain is going through significant changes. Experiences during this time help shape the skills, habits, and behaviours that young people will carry into adulthood.
Haidt argues that children and teens need opportunities to gradually become more independent during this stage of life. They need chances to make decisions, take appropriate risks, solve problems, experience failure, and learn how to navigate the world without an adult always stepping in.
One of the concerns Haidt raises is what he calls “safetyism.” This is the idea that in our efforts to keep children safe, we may sometimes protect them from experiences that are actually important for their development. A child who is never allowed to experience small failures, disagreements, uncertainty, or manageable risks has fewer opportunities to learn how to handle those situations independently.
Haidt then introduces a second major challenge: smartphones. He argues that just as children were becoming more protected in the real world, smartphones and the internet gave them access to an enormous online world with very few boundaries. Instead of gradually gaining independence through real-world experiences, young people can now enter an adult digital world long before they are ready for it.
The chapter also looks at the idea of rites of passage — the experiences and responsibilities that have traditionally helped young people make the transition from childhood to adulthood. Haidt suggests that we need to find ways to give children increasing levels of freedom and responsibility as they grow, rather than keeping them dependent in the real world while giving them unrestricted access to the digital world.
A key takeaway for me from this chapter is that growing up requires practice. Children need opportunities to gradually take on more responsibility and independence. Our job as adults is not to remove every challenge from their path, but to help them develop the skills and confidence to handle those challenges.
Reflection Questions for Families
- What responsibilities could your child begin taking on more independently?
- Are there situations where we may be protecting our children from challenges that could actually help them grow?
- How can we gradually increase our children's independence as they get older?
- Are we giving our children more freedom in the real world while also giving them more freedom in the digital world?
