Prairie Sky News

Dear Prairie Sky Families,

As we move into the final weeks of the school year, things are quickly becoming busier here at Prairie Sky! It’s always an exciting time as we look back on a year of learning while also enjoying many memorable activities and celebrations together.

Here’s a look at what’s coming up this week:

  • Students vs. Teachers soccer Games (throughout the week): One of our favorite traditions! Students will have the chance to challenge staff in some friendly (and competitive!) volleyball games.
  • Provincial Achievement Tests: Our Grade 6 and Grade 9 students will begin their provincial assessments this week. We wish them all the best as they demonstrate their learning.

It’s shaping up to be a fantastic and energetic week filled with learning, celebration, and community. Thank you, as always, for your continued support of Prairie Sky School.

Safety

We would like to remind all students and families about the importance of safety before and after school. Students riding bikes or scooters are expected to wear helmets at all times and to ride cautiously, especially when approaching school grounds. We have noticed an increase in the use of motorized scooters, and it is essential that riders slow down and remain aware of others to help keep everyone safe. Additionally, students must ensure that their bikes and scooters are properly locked when at school. Unfortunately, there have been a few instances of theft recently involving items that were not secured. Taking these simple precautions will help keep our students safe and protect their belongings.

Book Study: The Anxious Generation

Chapter 3 Summary: "Discover Mode and the Need for Play"

In Chapter 3, Haidt explores the important role that play has in helping children develop into confident, capable, and resilient adults. He explains that children are naturally wired to learn through exploration, curiosity, and play. Through these experiences, they develop problem-solving skills, social awareness, emotional regulation, and independence.

Haidt introduces the concept of "discover mode"—a state in which children are free to explore, take appropriate risks, make mistakes, and learn from their experiences. This type of learning is very different from simply being told what to do or how to solve a problem. It requires children to engage with the world around them, make decisions, and adapt when things don't go as planned.

The chapter argues that many children today spend less time in discover mode than previous generations. Increased adult supervision, highly structured schedules, and more time spent on screens have reduced opportunities for independent play and exploration. While these changes often come from a desire to keep children safe and successful, Haidt suggests they may unintentionally limit opportunities to develop resilience and confidence.

One of the key messages in this chapter is that children grow when they are given the chance to face manageable challenges on their own. Whether it is solving a disagreement with a friend, organizing a game, or navigating a new situation, these experiences help build the skills they will need throughout life.

Reflection Questions for Families

  • How much time does your child have for unstructured play and exploration?
  • Are there opportunities to give your child more independence in age-appropriate ways?
  • How can we balance keeping children safe while still allowing them to experience challenges and learn from mistakes?
