Prairie Sky News
Welcome Back to the 2026-27 School Year!
Dear Prairie Sky School Families,
Welcome to a new school year at Prairie Sky School!
What an incredible first week we have had welcoming students back into our classrooms and hallways. The excitement, energy, and enthusiasm throughout the building have been truly inspiring. After months apart, it has been wonderful to see students reconnecting with friends, building relationships with their teachers, and embracing new learning opportunities.
As I walked through the school this week, I was continually impressed by the positivity and engagement of our students. Classrooms were filled with curiosity, laughter, and meaningful learning. From our youngest learners to our oldest students, everyone has returned ready to learn, grow, and contribute to our school community.
I would also like to recognize the tremendous efforts of our teachers and support staff. Their dedication, preparation, and commitment to creating welcoming and inclusive learning environments have helped make the start of the year such a success. The collective energy of our students and staff has set a positive tone for what promises to be an outstanding year ahead.
At Prairie Sky School, we believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential to student success. This weekly Family Week Ahead message will be one of the ways we stay connected throughout the year. Each week, you can expect updates and information about:
- School athletics and extracurricular activities
- School Council news and opportunities for involvement
- Important dates and upcoming events
- Celebration and recognition days
- Wellness Team initiatives and supports
- Student learning highlights
- Other important school information and reminders
We are excited for the many opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to celebrating the accomplishments, growth, and successes of our students throughout the year.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we will make the 2026-27 school year a memorable and successful one for all students.
Have a wonderful week!
Warm regards,
Peter Rowe
Principal

Student Safety Reminder
At Prairie Sky School, the safety and well-being of our students is always our highest priority. As students establish their school routines and travel to and from school each day, we ask families to take a few moments to review important safety expectations.
Walking to and from School
- Students should always use designated crosswalks and follow all traffic signals when crossing streets.
- Please remind children to stay alert, avoid distractions, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
- Students should avoid crossing mid-block or between parked vehicles.
Bike Safety
- Students riding bicycles to school are expected to do so responsibly and at a safe speed, particularly when near school property, sidewalks, and pedestrian areas.
- All cyclists should wear a properly fitted, CSA-approved helmet.
- Bikes should be secured in designated bike rack areas upon arrival at school.
Electric Scooters and E-Bikes
We continue to see an increasing number of students using electric scooters and e-bikes. Families are encouraged to review all applicable City of Calgary bylaws and regulations regarding their safe operation. Students should:
- Follow all traffic laws and local bylaws.
- Operate devices in a safe and respectful manner.
- Be mindful of pedestrians and other users of pathways and sidewalks.
- Wear appropriate safety equipment, including a helmet where required.
Working together, we can help ensure that all students arrive at school safely and return home safely each day. Thank you for reinforcing these important safety habits with your children. By making safety a shared responsibility between home and school, we can create a safer environment for everyone in our Prairie Sky School community.

Volunteers Needed
In a school of over 1200 students, you can imagine that it takes some hands-on effort to provide this extra support for the students’ experience. We can’t do it without families who want to be involved and help out. Involvement is quite minimal with opportunities a couple of times a month, typically for short durations. You don’t have to be available to help every single time, but if more people can help once in a while, then it makes it possible for us to continue providing these extras which the students and staff appreciate so much. Please reach out to us at prairieskyschoolcouncil@outlook.com to get involved.
We would love to have you! Being part of the school council has many benefits; when your children see you involved in their education they tend to have better outcomes in school for themselves, you get to create a social community for yourself within the school and the neighbourhood, and you get to be part of some conversations and information that sometimes only happen at the meetings or you get insider information ahead of time. Please join our wonderful community to help provide an incredible experience for your child/children at Prairie Sky School.
Fun Lunch - Healthy Hunger
Our first Fun Lunch will happen on September 23 (Grades 1-3) and September 24 (Grades 4-9) and will be provided by Subway. If this is your first time, then you will need to create a profile for your child/children. If you are returning to the Healthy Hunger platform and have a profile already, then you’ll just need to select your child’s teacher/class for this year. You’ll do both things at the following link: www.healthyhunger.ca
Once you have their profile set up then you will be able to place and pay for your orders for any upcoming Fun Lunch dates. We will get the following months set up shortly.
Kindergarten students will have other treats and opportunities provided simply because the Fun Lunch delivery times do not work for the kindergarten class hours.
Sun-Oka Fruit Farms - Apple Fundraiser
Last year we ran an apple fundraiser hosted by Sun-Oka Fruit Farms in British Columbia. These apples were SO big and delicious - they were amazing! You get a large box of apples for the price. Sun-Oka Farms has confirmed that their produce is fine despite the fires in the area, and that the hot and dry conditions are actually contributing to an excellent apple growing season. We will be doing apple orders again through the Sun-Oka Farms platform; you can order just for yourself, but you can also spread the word and send a link to friends, family, and coworkers as well. You can access the fundraiser at the following link until Tuesday, October 6th when ordering will close:
https://fundraising.sunokafruit.com/seller_1/082482443/org-campaign/prairie-sky-school-council-harvest-2026
Apples will be delivered after Thanksgiving and we will communicate that date as soon as we have it solidified.
Please support the students and school by ordering some amazing apples - they are great for eating and for baking!
