Message from the Principal

Dear Prairie Sky School Families,

As we wrap up our second week of the school year, it has been wonderful to see students and staff settling into their routines. The positive energy throughout the building continues to grow, and classrooms are busy with learning, relationship-building, and new experiences.

One of the highlights of these first weeks has been seeing the excitement and wonder in our students' eyes each day. It has also been great to see so many students arriving early in the morning and staying after school to participate in team tryouts and extracurricular activities. Their enthusiasm, commitment, and school spirit are helping to create a vibrant and welcoming school community.

As is common at the start of a new school year, we use September to evaluate how our spaces and procedures are working. We have identified a few pinch points during arrival and dismissal times, particularly around some of our elementary entrances. To help improve traffic flow and ease congestion, we have made adjustments to some elementary students' entry and exit doors.

If this change affects your child, you will have received an email from both your child's teacher and the school administration. If you have not received an email, please assume your child's entry and exit location remains the same.

Thank you for your flexibility and support as we continue to refine our routines. We are looking forward to another great week of learning at Prairie Sky School.

Warm regards,

Peter Rowe
Principal
Prairie Sky School

CBE Offerings

The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join a live online series on supporting child and youth well-being. The series is hosted by the Recovery Alberta Community Education Service (CES) Program in collaboration with local experts from the Calgary community.

Attached to this email is a poster with sessions designed to provide families with knowledge, tools, and strategies to help navigate the challenges and opportunities of raising children and teens today. Along with the poster, additional session details are available on our corporate website: Child and Youth Well-Being Family and Caregiver Series

Safety

At Prairie Sky School, the safety and well-being of our students is always our highest priority. As students establish their school routines and travel to and from school each day, we ask families to take a few moments to review important safety expectations.

  • Students should always use designated crosswalks and follow all traffic signals when crossing streets.
  • Please remind children to stay alert, avoid distractions, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
  • Students should avoid crossing mid-block or between parked vehicles.

Note from the Office

Please be advised that school pick-ups after 2:00 p.m. will not be accommodated. If your child needs to be picked up early, please ensure that the pick-up takes place before 2:00 p.m.

All early pick-ups must also be communicated to the school in advance. Please notify us at prairiesky@cbe.ab.ca. Last-minute requests may not be accommodated, as they can disrupt the school day and our regular routines.

We kindly ask for your cooperation in providing sufficient notice and planning all early pick-ups accordingly.

Book Study: The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt

  • We are excited to continue our bi-weekly book study with parents and guardians. There is still time to get the book and read along with us.
  • We will pick up where we left off by reading chapter 5 and I will provide a summary next week

Volunteers Needed

In a school of over 1200 students, you can imagine that it takes some hands-on effort to provide this extra support for the students’ experience. We can’t do it without families who want to be involved and help out. Involvement is quite minimal with opportunities a couple of times a month, typically for short durations. You don’t have to be available to help every single time, but if more people can help once in a while, then it makes it possible for us to continue providing these extras which the students and staff appreciate so much. Please reach out to us at prairieskyschoolcouncil@outlook.com to get involved.

Fun Lunch - Healthy Hunger

Our first Fun Lunch will happen on September 23 (Grades 1-3) and September 24 (Grades 4-9) and will be provided by Subway. If this is your first time, then you will need to create a profile for your child/children. If you are returning to the Healthy Hunger platform and have a profile already, then you’ll just need to select your child’s teacher/class for this year. You’ll do both things at the following link: www.healthyhunger.ca

Once you have their profile set up then you will be able to place and pay for your orders for any upcoming Fun Lunch dates. We will get the following months set up shortly.

Kindergarten students will have other treats and opportunities provided simply because the Fun Lunch delivery times do not work for the kindergarten class hours.
